Celebrate Spring! Make a Window Transparency!
Spring is here at last! The sun is shining, the snow is melting, mud is everywhere, a sure sign of spring! To celebrate the spring-like feeling in the air we created this beautiful window transparency. It look so pretty hanging in a sunny window.
We used this book which I found here.
It’s written in German, but don’t let that stop you from buying this beautiful book. It is full of patterns and templates to create a number of gorgeous window transparencies! I have a friend who generously sat down with me one evening and translated the colors as well as some important information about the craft. Once you do one or two and understand the process it really will not be imperative for you to be able to read German to benefit from this book!
We chose to do this pattern because it was the simplest spring pattern in the book. By simple I mean it had the least amount of pieces to cut out.
Here’s what you’ll need for this project!
- Green Cardstock
- White cardstock if you want to make more permanent pattern pieces
- Yellow kite paper
- Red/Purple or Pink kite paper
- tracing paper
- sharp scissors
- small Exacto knife or craft knife
- small cutting mat
- Sharp pencil
- soft eraser
How to Create:
Begin by tracing all the pieces individually onto tracing paper. Cut them out. This is what you should end up with.
If you want to make permanent pattern pieces, trace these onto white cardstock. These can be kept for future use, so you do not have to make the pattern next time.
Trace your pieces onto the appropriate color of paper:
- The frame piece with the rabbit and the grass is cut out of light green cardstock.
- The big yellow egg shape is cut from yellow kite paper.
- The three sized circles are also cut from yellow kite paper.
- The small egg shape can be cut from red, pink, purple or really any color you like, in kite paper.
Your pieces should look something like this:
Be sure to trim off the pencil edges of the three circles. The pencil markings on the Large and small egg shape do not matter as much. Their edges will be covered by the green cardstock frame. The pencil markings on the green cardstock frame also do not matter as much as that side will be treated as the back, where the gluing happens:)
Using your small craft knife, cut out the small egg shape in the green cardstock frame. Be sure to cut the opening slightly smaller than your small kite paper egg.
Making sure the pencil marked side of the green cardstock frame is facing up, glue the green cardstock around the small egg opening. Place the pretty colored kite paper egg on top of the opening.
Glue all the way around the opening of the cardstock rabbit frame. Place the large yellow kite paper egg shape on top of the opening.
Now for the layers of sunshine! Be sure all the pencil marks have been cut away from the last three circles. Center the smallest circle in the frame. Glue it in place. Now lay the medium sized circle over top of that, Glue. Lastly, place the largest circle over and glue in place. Beautiful! This gives you that lovely impression of the sun’s rays radiating outwards:)
Oh so pretty! Tape it to a sunny window to enjoy the transparent effect. Enjoy:)
