Is it even possible to manage your house and still homeschool?
Homeschooling Mom’s are some of the hardest working people I know. Dedicated to their child’s education, they give it their all while still balancing the housework, menu planning, toddlers, school projects, field trips, lessons, etc . . .
I don’t know about you, but for me, life sometimes careens out of control and before I know it I feel like I’m failing at everything! Chaos reigns! I really hesitate to post this because I struggle with this daily.
The truth is, I can’t do it all, and neither can you. But there are little things you and I can do to make it better. Little things that can make this whole homeschool lifestyle thing possible!
Life is better run as a marathon and not as a sprint.
Believe me, I am a sprinter, . . . AHem ok, . . . not an athletic one . . . but I am absolutely a sprinter in the housekeeping and organizing departments.
Sprinting doesn’t work!
Let me explain what I mean by sprinting.
When it comes to managing your home while homeschooling, sprinting means cleaning occasionally and madly as a huge and overwhelming project. This way has never worked for me.
Running a marathon, however, means pacing yourself. When it comes to housecleaning it means doing a little bit every day instead of burning yourself out on major project cleaning.
I have tried many different methods, some of them left me feeling like a very unsuccessful Cinderella. There I was doing the work that should have brought those lovely shiny sparkly results and yet those results remained elusive. Unattainable!
Obviously, I was doing something wrong. That’s when I found something that actually works.
It’s my secret weapon! Inevitably when the house starts falling apart all around me I can pretty much guarantee that I have neglected to employ my secret weapon!
So what is it?
That dirty little word that most creatives disparage. In fact, I think this little medium sized word is the secret to all kinds of success.
Here’s how it works:
A little bit done, each and every day grows exponentially and amounts to more than can be done in a huge cleaning project that leaves you worn out and exhausted and never really done.
Start small. Remember no sprinting. When you treat cleaning as a marathon you pace yourself for endurance.
Here’s what I have added to my day that has made a world of difference:
- Make my bed every morning. (3 min)
- My dishwasher is on three times a day.( Yes, I cook from scratch, my kids bake and I wash as few dishes as possible by hand.) I have four kids. They all take turns unloading the dishwasher.
- I load the dishwasher once in the morning, afternoon and evening. (5min) each time.
- Declutter one room every day for a week. (5 min) sometimes that 5 min grows to 10 min.
- Evening family declutter of the main living area. ( 5 min) There are 6 of us that makes for a total of 30 min of tidying.
- Evening Kitchen tidy and declutter. (5-10) min
Because we are home all day my house has an annoying tendency to not stay clean!I’m sure it’s just me and no one else suffers from this problem! . . . Kidding:)
Manage your house and still homeschool!
Yep, read alouds and sock matching!
So I’ve also added an after lunch chore time which everyone participates in. We were doing our after lunch chore time before I started adding the little 5 min routines here and there. Seriously these little 5 min increments here and there done consistently have made a world of difference and I don’t feel like I’m Cinderella anymore!
My Absolute Favourite Home Management Book!
I highly recommend you get yourself this book. Read it, listen to it, borrow it! It has been a game changer in my home!
If you struggle with routines or feel like you are drowning in the clutter then you must read this book! Especially if all those complicated organizing systems and house cleaning books out there have never worked for you! This one is different, . .in a good way:)
What cleaning routines have worked for you while you homeschool? I would love to hear what has and has not worked for you. We can all learn from each other’s missteps and successes along the way. I’m on this journey with you:) Believe me, this is a daily struggle. I don’t have it all figured out, so when I say I’m on this journey with you I really mean it.
Blessings to your homeschool!
