Recently we had the opportunity to take my kids to old gold rush town Barkerville B.C. We love to visit this highly interactive old town museum.
If you have never been I highly recommend popping in if you are in the area.
There is so much to see and do that it would be impossible to do it all in one day:)
I have been to many other old town type museums in my life and Barkerville still ranks as a favorite. I don’t know that I have been to any that are quite as interactive as Barkerville.
What makes Barkerville special?
Is it the stagecoach rides, or the old town shops you can explore and purchase brown paper packages all tied up with strings? Perhaps it’s the live theater, the delicious food at the bakery and restaurants or maybe the lively town tours offered? I’ve really thought about it and honestly, I think it’s the people who work and run Barkerville. They love their historical town and it shows. they dress up in their fabulous costumes and walk around Barkerville really acting and talking as though it is 1862. You really do feel like you’ve stepped through a time machine into another age. They talk and act all day long as if it is truly the gold rush age.
I had the pleasure of eavesdropping as one of the Barkerville ladies read a lovely old fashioned letter to her comrades sitting on the board walk. It was wonderful to hear the old fashioned words and hear the local gossip as if it were a very real event. This was their entertainment. Their old fashioned social media so to speak. It was delightful and so refreshing!
There are two schools in the town of Barkerville. A Victorian one and a Chinese school. They both are in session twice a day and you can take a step back in time and get a taste of what education was like back in the day!
We also had the opportunity to visit Miss Wendle at the Wendle house for a delicious piece of spice cake cooked in her cast iron wood cook stove.
All in all it was a fabulous field trip for the family and one I plan on taking again and again with my family!
